July 30th, 2011

Ok, so I had one of those rare, once in a year kind of evenings for me where both of my sons had a sleep over at a friends house and my wife played her “Hall Pass” card and went out with Christina to the wine dinner at Mesa Verde CC tonight. What to do???? Pull out and dust off the old cooking skills, that’s what! Quick trip to the store, asparagus, broccoli, rib eye and that killer williams sonoma dry rub and ready to go!!

5 or 6 pure alone hours is quite rare in my life at this moment, so it is definitely a time to indulge and enjoy being at home. How to celebrate? I started by playing my iPod on shuffle….some great mix of Ryan Adams, ColdPlay, the Killers, and the Counting Crows. Hit an old REM song, whoops, didn’t REM just re-issue Fables of the Reconstruction??? Yeah, baby! It’s probably only one of two REM albums that I don’t own, so it was a must download and indulge starter for the night. Check!! Fired up the BBQ and now Fables has just started, it’s amazing, I’m drinking a Sierra Nevada and REM is taking me right back to freshman year at Furman University and it takes me back just like I’m partying with Morgan Buffington in E-209 to Fables of the fuckin’ Reconstruction!! I just happen to have a better view now….

It takes me back to fall of 1988, playing great tennis, learning how to drink, fooling around with girls, opening my mind to this whole university thing, and the girls (oh, I mentioned that!). Just this week I saw that my tennis coach at Furman U had retired – I caught the ticker on the Tennis Channel that Paul Scarpa retired. Wow, good thing I didn’t wait for that job when I was an assistant, 20 years later!! Coach Scarpa was simple one of the best influences in my life- a great coach, a great man, and a great friend. Too many great road trips to even talk about with those Furman Boys!!!

As Ryan Adams said “sometimes it’s nice to stay home, everybody goes out”, and as a testament to that line, I totally enjoyed making the asparagus, broccoli and steak in the backyard all by myself. I cracked open a 2007 Benziger Cab, it was going down really well. I was just enjoying a second glass with dinner when I noticed a funny shape in the tree on the course next to me – an outline of an owl!!

At first, I thought it was a hawk- we have a lot of california falcons and hawks. But no, that is definitely an owl with the way it is turning it’s neck in every direction.

Wow, we’ve got a lot of nature down here- squirrels, raccoons, birds, possums, coyotes, but i have never seen an owl. I finished my dinner and ponder the sight, and thought about what an owl means symbolically. Me and this owl are basically hanging out drinking wine, so why not?? Of course, I have my cell at hand in case one of my boys chokes at their sleepover, and I google “owl symbology”.

Whoops!! TMI after the week that I had! I google “owl symboloby” and the first fucking entry is a wikipedia result has a caption that says “The Aztecs and Maya, along with other Natives of Mesoamerica, considered the owl a symbol of death and destruction. In fact, the Aztec god of death,…and it goes on to say that people always thought that an owl was a symbol of imminent death!

What? FUCK!!! TMI!! TMI!!! That is not what I was looking for with this huge owl staring at me on the branch above my backyard. No, can’t be after I just had shingles, an inner ear infection, and a massive nosebleed over a week period!

Must look at result number 2!!! OK, result # 2 says “It should be clear that the owl was honored as the keeper of spirits who had passed from one plane to another. Often myth indicates the owl accompanying a spirit to the underworld – winging it’s newly freed soul from the physical world into the realm of spirit.

A quick-list of owl symbolic meanings:

Wisdom

Mystery

Transition

Messages

Intelligence

Mysticism

Protection

Secrets

Native Americans associated the meaning of owl with wisdom, foresight, and keeper of sacred knowledge. This may largely be due to the fact that the owl is a great foreteller of weather conditions. Also its ability to see at night is legend among the Native Americans, and this attribute would be invoked during ceremonies when an oracle of secret knowledge was required.”

OK, I am LOVING that result!! definitely going with that one if you know what I mean!!

Isn’t that so cool? I am sitting there thinking, OK, you my furry friend are looking at me bringing me some kind of message from the other side – are you offering me something from a friend, family member, or what to guess?? My friend and my Fellow Traveller sat there with me for about an hour – I took it all in, thinking back to lots of college friends, my dad, other family members, and just who might be trying to talk to me from the body of this beautiful creature.

Then of course, in my infinite comedic reaction, I think of Russel Brand, and how he would play all of this death and omen of the sighting of this owl….So, there I am, alone, with this fucking’s owl, and this thing is just staring at me, like the omen of fuming dethat, some harbinger that my time has come……!!!!!!

Well, I guess if I make it to Bass Lake in two weeks we will know what kind of harbinger it really is!

MOVING ON!!! I am going o check this one up to very cool nature and watch my tea leaves the next few days. Happy Birthday my wife!!! 41 tomorrow and tells me she just wants to have another baby, really!!! killing me, so torn. Do I want to be 62 when my kid is 20?? Beats larry King I guess…

Costa Mesa AYSO Soccer Team Takes Title

Congrats go out to the Golden Hawks of the Costa Mesa Soccer AYSO Boys 10 league. The boys had an undefeated season leading up to a very, very enthralling final match against the Black Knights. Coaches Mike Guyot and Kai Weisser led the team into the title match, and the boys played a good match, with the Golden Hawks behind 4-2. With only a few minutes left in regulation time, the boys scored a goal to bring it closer to 4-3 down. Then, with only 30 seconds left in regulation, the boys popped in another goal to draw to a 4-4 tie. In the second overtime period, the Golden Hawks managed to get another two goals and hold the Black Knights to only one, ensuring them the regular season title and an undefeated season in the boys U10 league for Costa Mesa AYSO.

My son was on the team and had a great season. It’s always great to meet new families and enjoy watching all the kids at different ability levels come together to make a team through a season. Our coaches did an amazing job with this group- way to go guys!

Good luck to the team in the regional tournaments!
